Here's one of our latest little cuties. It's a great rambler in Seattle and we topped it with an ASC Building Products "Skyline" metal roof in classic brown and to give it a bit of an kick - the flashings are in Bare Zincalume which pulled together nicely with the new gutters and downspouts. Tax Credit Nearing The End

As much as it makes sense to give a credit for a product that will save thousands of dollars in the long run, cut back on landfill and reduce energy waste, so far it does not look like there will be an extension or a new credit for 2012 for metal roofing. That being said, now is the time to take advantage of the 10% back on your 2011 tax return (up to $500) for new metal roofing installed by December 31st on your primary residence. The good thing about the 2011 credit, it is not included in the 2009/2010 energy credit numbers, so even if you used the energy credit in 2009/2010, you can still use this one if you had the work done in 2011. Sterling Roof and Copper Gutters - True Gems!

We just finished this beautiful home in Auburn, Washington. The roofing is Cool Matte Black Sterling by ASC Building Products and the gutters are Half-Round produced in pure Copper.

Sterling roofing is a 24 gauge standing seam product installed on clips for a true floating roof, ideal for long runs to allow for expansion and contraction. The manufacturer offers a Limited Lifetime Warranty on the finish and our company offers up to a Lifetime Weather Tightness Warranty as well.

The Copper gutters are produced locally and will last a lifetime, changing colors as the years progress. Half -Round gutters get their name from the fact they have a barrel look, as if cut in half and are a great alternative to the standard K-style gutters. They are produced in many colors, bare or copper and in different sizes.

In all the project took 83 man days for a total of 664 hours. We removed and disposed of the original shake roofing, put on new underlayments, replaced the skylights (this is a great idea when you are having new roofing installed, skylights do not have a long lifespan) then installed the roofing, gutters and flashings all to the manufacturer's specifications. All went smoothly and we are very proud of our crew's attention to detail and their workmanship! - Keni

Rebuilding Together 2011

This year we had the opportunity to put on a new roof section for Mrs. Leggitt for Rebuilding Together South Sound. We got there early Saturday, May 14th and almost got it done before the end of the day (A couple of us had to return to finish up). We pulled off the old roofing, installed new firring and insulation and installed a NorClad roof (donated by ASC Building Products) to match the upper roof done earlier. Everyone from our company came to help; Jerry, Haley, Wayne, Keni, Johnny, Justin, Andrew and Joe. Rebuilding Together 2010

I was just about to post about our Rebuilding Together Project for this year when I noticed I did not post our 2010 accomplishment. Better late than never, especially when it comes to thanking all of the employees here who supported last summers project!

Work Of Art In Progress

We are nearing halfway on our current project, a beautiful log home which is being transformed with a 24 gauge Matte Black "Sterling" metal roof by ASC Building Products. In addition, we will be replacing the gutters with 6" Half-Round Copper gutters and 3" Downspouts.

Because of the extensive detail work, this will take 65 man days to complete, which is one of the main reasons metal roofing is pricier than a conventional composition replacement. We are proud to have been selected by this homeowner, who found us through Angie's List.

It's back! The "Energy Efficiency Tax Incentive" was approved in December 2010 to extend into 2011 with some modifications. The tax credit will still include almost all of the metal roofing products we sell and is for 10% of the purchase price up to $500 for your qualifying primary residence. As more details become available we will provide them. Although the credit is not as high as the last two years, it will help offset the initial cost of metal roofing and make your project more affordable. Even more important, the government continues to support metal roofing as an energy efficient product which will help lower heating and cooling bills for your home. We are now down to 2 days to get your metal roofing orders in for your primary residence to qualify for the up to $1500 Energy Savings Tax Credit. Orders have to be in to our office by 2:00 Thursday, December 16th to get them delivered before the end of the year. My recent trip to Metalcon in Las Vegas was very enlightening. Metalcon is the annual International convention for the metal construction industry. This was their 20th anniversary. I have been involved with nearly every Metalcon but have been a consistent instructor and presenter for over 10 years. The most significant thing I took from the program this year was the clear recognition metal roofing is the number one choice of performance exterior products. Of course I have always believed metal was the best but when another non-biased and significant industry also feels the same way, that is enlightening!

As I am sure you will agree, Solar energy is quickly becoming a much higher priority at the Local, State, Federal and International level. This energy source is so attractive because it is free, dependable and abundant. We are truly just seeing a “tip of the iceberg” on what this energy source can provide for us. The Solar industry is very focused on the roofing industry because roofs are the most practical and available foundation for solar collection devices. The obvious roofing choice for the solar industry is metal. Yes, metal. That is simply because metal is the only practical roofing material that will outlast the solar collector material! Of course Slate will also outlast the solar material but remember I said practical.

There are a growing number of solar product manufacturers that are developing and building products that can easily be incorporated into metal roof systems. This industry will explode in the coming years and it is safe to say solar will be a significant part of the construction and remodeling industry from this point forward. Solar does have a long way to go and as with all technological advancements, a more attractive price point as the technology becomes more widespread and developed. All the more reason to make the choice and go with metal now. Why replace your roof with a non metal product only to have to replace it again when you incorporate solar in the future? And you will likely incorporate solar. Metal just makes sense. It always has, and this is just another significant benefit supporting that statement.

I am so encouraged by our industry and the progress by the leading manufacturers and industry associations within it. It is so enlightening to be surrounded by people dedicated to make our lives better while ensuring a more sustainable and friendly environment for the generations to follow. Homeowners: Protect Yourself

Two weeks ago a good friend of my family had a horrible accident while doing a "side" job for a local handyman. I would share the details but since this will end up in the courts, I will just say he was severely injured, has had two surgeries already and will not be able to return to any kind of work for many months. UNFORTUNATELY, and this is the part that homeowners need to heed: The company he was working for was not insured, did not have L&I and as of now, it looks like they were not paying into unemployment. What this means, the homeowners are being sued for the damages and their homeowners insurance (thank goodness they had insurance) will probably end up responsible for the hospital bills and other costs associated with the injuries. In the end, this will cost all homeowners as these incidents lead to much higher costs. It is very important to check any company you allow to work on your property for the proper insurance and employee coverages. It is actually illegal to work as a company without the proper licenses and insurances but in these hard times, it is something some employers are willing to forgo to help bring their costs down so they can have the lowest bids. Protect yourself and help make our work environment save and fair for all employees.

Metal Roofing in New Mexico!

Straight from Metal Roof Country. I just got back from a most glorious week in Red River, New Mexico. I thought if I posted a picture of the amazing cabin, one of the originals in the area, with its cute new metal roof, I could justify blogging about my adventure. Actually, in the area everything is clad with metal, new and old, big, small, over-the-top and even the outhouses (thank goodness we had indoor plumbing!). I spent the days hiking and fishing and the nights watching the deer (11 at our peak) and the big black bear that visited us 3 nights in a row. The elevation is at just over 10,000 feet, so snow was already starting to dust the hill tops, and by Christmas, they can expect several feet to be resting on their roofs. Metal is a must in Red River, for many of the same reasons it makes so much sense in Washington: tree debris; snow; large amounts of rainfall; and winds. Now that I am back....let's work on getting metal roofing for your project!

To Fir or not to Fir?

We get that question all the time. Adding firring to your metal roofing project depends on several factors, but often it comes down to cost. In many cases we can roof right over existing composition shingles or torch-down type roofing and save cost on disposal and also save space in the landfills but other times firring is necessary. We will add firring on top of a composition or torch-down type roof that is not even or does not lay flat or to help build the pitch of a roof. Firring is attached directly to the framing of the roof so it also gives us a new solid surface to apply the roofing to. We will not fir over a wood shake or shingle roof, that must be torn off before reroofing. When we add firring, we space it according to the metal roofing specifications on span and load tables for your area. When done correctly, you will be able to walk on the flats of the roofing for cleaning and maintenance. Have you used your enegry tax credit for 2009/2010? This credit is good on some approved items which help make your home more energy effiecient, such as metal roofing, doors, windows, insulation and water heaters. Almost all of the metal roofing products we install qualify for the credit so it's like getting a 30% discount (up to $1500) refunded on your 2010 Federal Income Taxes. This credit has not been extended, and as of yet there is no mention from the government for a "new" credit, so once 2010 is over the credit is gone. It sounds like we might have a warm and rain free evening for July 4th. That always makes me glad, especially since we have a three-day weekend, but it scares me a little too. Four years ago a garage in my neighborhood (actually one house over behind my street) caught fire from a bottle rocket. It landed on the roof and immediately started burning in a buildup of pine needles. Within a half hour, the fire department was there and able to put out the fire with only minimal damage, but half of the composition roof did have to be replaced. If you live in an area where the celebration might throw sparks your way, please be sure and check out your property before you head off to bed. Smoldering flames in the grass, shrubs, even roof tops can take hours to burn, and by then most of us are in bed. Enjoy the promised nice weekend (according to King 5 this morning!) and have a fun and safe Fourth of July!

We are gearing up for our 2010 Rebuilding Together South Sound project. This year we will be providing and installing a new metal roof to a family who really needs one. We have some other chores to help out with as well so the day will be filled with lots of activity. We look forward to these community projects and bring out the whole "Family"!

The Lowest Bid Probably Costs Us All!

It is important to get a couple of bids for your project - we completely understand that, but when comparing those bids it is just as important to compare not only the product offered, but the overall business services promised.

In the current market in Washington and partially because of the high unemployment rate, roofing "companies" are popping up daily. This would seem completely harmless and a good opportunity for a homeower to take advantage of "lower" prices, but in reality it is hurting everyone, some now and some down the road. How you ask? Contractors who significantly underbid are most likely saving money because they are cheating. They save thousands of dollars by using independent contractors (sometimes day labor, friends, other out of work roofers) and do not pay unemployment taxes, workers' compensation insurance premiums and dodge wage laws. This is illegal in Washington and as a homeowner, you have no recourse if they steal your deposit, leave the job unfinished, or finish a job incorrectly, and as the homeowner you can be sued by an injured worker and held responsible for unpaid insurance premiums and damages.

Taking into account all of the facets of a project bid will help you understand why pricing can be so different from company to company. We have permanent crew members who are legally employed and follow all Washington laws. We provide health insurance, retirement benefits and a safe environment. By asking each of your bidders for documentation to prove their status in Washington and taking some time to check them out with the state, you will potentially save yourself money in your roofing process, and you will save all employees and business owners of Washington in the future.

Just wanted to express a big THANK YOU to everyone who has "endured" some kind of graduation ceremony over the last couple of weeks. We were very lucky to have our daughter graduate from the University of Washington this weekend, and as usual, the ceremony was long, droll, unentertaining, and did I mention long. Parking was a fiasco and the crowd was overwhelming. BUT, thank goodness for the friends and family that attended. It didn't seem like it would make a difference to my kid, but it did. She mentioned last night just how amazing it was seeing everyone there to support her, and I am sure the other students felt the same way. So, to all who did the right thing, bucked up and gave up a glorius Friday or Saturday to see a neighbor, cousin, friend, grandchild, etc.... graduate, you are outstanding in my book and I am sure you are in their eyes too! You know who you are and you should be proud - that too is a big accomplishment! THANK YOU!

Spring Cleaning

It's time for the Great Northwest Winds to kick up and clear your trees of loose branches, needles, sticky cherry and plum blossoms and pollen. Those of course will all land right on your metal roof. Spring is a great time to get on the roof and check for any winter damage. Check carefully around the chimneys, skylights and any plumbing penetrations to make sure debris is not wedged or built up around the flashings. This debris will just collect more debris and so on until there's enough to dam up the water and cause leaking. Roof penetrations are always a suspect spot if you have a leak and keeping them clear is the best way to maintain the flashing integrity. I can't promise spring cleaning your roof is as fun as spring cleaning the closets...but it might be more important!

The Fundamental Roof

Your roof selection is as important as the foundation your house is built on. Even if you take away thinking "green" or "sustainable" or wanting to gather water or solar energy, you should still seriously consider a metal roof. Roof systems are required by building codes to be resistant to wind, impact and fire and they need to protect your home from the environment. They should be durable and weathertight and maintained in some way or another. With that being said, metal roofing, installed correctly of course, goes above all building code requirements and will keep your house safe from the elements. Metal roofing is designed to be extremely weathertight and durable when used and installed correctly and needs minimal yearly maintenance. Your roof is a fundamental part of your home, and without a good roof the value and longevity are compromised.

Homeowners Association vs Metal Roofing

The history of Homeowner's Associations (HOA's) dates to the 1960's and they really took off in the late 1970's. Back then metal roofing was limited to primarily through fastener (barn style) panels and some standing seam. Either way the look was long straight metal panels not necessarily as pleasing to the eye as wood shake, tile or slate roofing. In the 70's and 80's, shake, tile and slate were about as fashionable as you could get, and HOA's preferred their look and resale value over composition and other less expensive options. Therefore, CC&R's (Convenants, Conditions and Restrictions) were written to include very specific roofing choices - mostly shake, tile and slate, excluding metal or composition roofing.

Now times have changed. Metal roofing comes in many styles, including those that mimic shake, tile and slate. Even the new standing seam panels are used on some of the highest end homes in our area. And funny thing, those roofs put on in the 70's and 80's are starting to fail. Although attractive, not very durable for this area. Not so funny, HOA's are finding it hard to accept metal roofing as an alternative to the roofing in their "original" CC&R's.

That's where we come in. We are here to help educate HOA's about the "vast" choices of metal roofing with several reasons to make the switch. Most have Energy Star Ratings and qualify for the Energy Tax Credit. Metal roofing is made from recycled materials and completely recycleable at lifes end. Most come with extended warranties (up to Lifetime) and last far longer than any other roofing choice. Their maintenance is minimal and in this area stand up to moss, tree pollen and pine needles! They maintain their look for years and years to come without chipping, fading, warping, cracking or breaking (like some of the other choices!).

If you are an HOA or a homeowner trying to plead your case to an HOA, please let us help you. It is very hard to dispute the benefits of metal roofing, and once you compare it to roofing in your CC&R, it becomes obvious that the options today stand ready to replace the options of yesteryear.

Going up Up UP

All of our manufacturer's have reported additional price increases expected to happen in March. We just had an increase on February 1st, but we were able to absorb most of the cost with only a few products increasing slightly. It looks like the next increase will effect all panels and flashings. These increases are being driven by higher raw material costs for iron ore, metallurgical coal and scrap, as well as the limited amount of import steel coming into the US. All quotes currently outstanding are good through March 14, 2010, and will have to be revised after that date.

Iron Ox EXPOSED!

The top picture is a comparison of ASC Building Products IRON OX metal roofing/siding panel. This panel is cold-rolled steel, and meant to weather like old barn roofing. The panel on the top left is right off the roll form machine, and the rusting was caused by the flat sheet being outside. The top middle panel was outside for 1 month in the middle of our hot summer, with very little moisture. The panel on the top right (and in the bottom picture) was outside from July to December, laying flat on the ground, over some wood. Interesting fact, both sides of the panel have virtually the same amount of rusting - so my hypothesis, it is the moisture in the air as much as the moisture on the panel (unscientific of course!). The rust color is amazing, but do plan for the run-off. Check out the link to Country Rustic Corrugated, this is a painted panel created to resemble the rusted Iron Ox. Country Rustic is a great alternative if rust run-off is a problem.

Made it through another Thanksgiving turkey day and the forks were flying. But sadly there were NO leftovers. Really. NONE. So this week no turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce and stuffing. Not even a piece of pumpkin pie to go with my morning coffee. Sounds a little sad, but honestly, I could not be more thankful. Thankful for my family who in our own strange ways make the holiday special. Thankful for my home and the fact that along with my 401k, it's worth a little more than this time last year. Thankful for friends and the people I meet each day who make it their mission to be nice, pleasant and respectful of the differences in each of us. I am thankful for my job and for this company that works very hard to be upstanding in our community. And in the morning, when I stop by the local Starbucks, I will be thankful they have turkey sandwiches with cranberry sauce and stuffing and delicious pumpkin lattes.

ASC Bare Zincalume Added To Tax Credit Qualifiers

ASC Building Products released the certificate which states roofs in their products with the Bare Zincalume finish now qualify for the 2009-2010 $1500 tax credit. This is good for the consumers in two ways: Bare Zincalume looks like galvanized metal but has a longer life span and reduces heat gain; and it is less expensive than the painted versions of the same panels. The savings just keep adding up!

Rebuilding Together - The Day Before!

The office is a buzz today trying to get things in order for the big project tomorrow. The roofing panels have been delivered to the job site by ASC and our Rep. Jeff checked on them to make sure everything is in order, and our Rep. Greg from Allied brought by the felt. Both were donations for this project. Wayne is loading up last minute supplies for our crews, Marty has nothing but ribs on his mind (he's our barbequer for the big event), and Haley is checking her lists over and over to make sure this goes off without a hitch (she's in charge of course!). We have six crew members and six office staff in our company, and along with spouses we will probably have about 20 volunteers present. This has been in the works for about 6 months, and by noon tomorrow (keep your fingers crossed) Ms. Horne should have a beautiful, lifelong red roof.

New Roofing and Siding Product From ASC

Drum roll please....introducing a brand new metal panel by ASC Building Products. It's called Country Rustic Corrugated, which refers to the paint finish "Country Rustic" on their Nu-Wave panel. This is a 24" coverage roof panel (double lap) and 26-2/3" coverage wall panel (single lap) in 26 gauge steel. Nu-Wave is a very popular panel, and over that last couple of years has taken off in the cold-rolled metal state known as Iron-Ox - check out our previous blog on Iron Ox. Country Rustic Corrugated is painted steel (a terra cotta orange with flecks of brown to give it that "rusty" look) and has the same outstanding warranty as all other ASC products. This is another great option when the artistic side of you needs to show!

How Are You Choosing Your Roofer?

We hear this frequently lately, PRICE MATTERS! Our experience with the "competition": The lower number of metal roof installations they have completed, the lower their price will be. The lower their price, the shorter time they will stay in the metal business. The shorter time they stay in business, the quicker you will need them in the future. It's a vicious cycle and we agree - PRICE MATTERS!

Tax Credit Revisited

Another call today about the tax credit. The inquiry was "I have a quote for metal but I don't know if it qualifies for the tax credit". I wish this were as easy as the government should make it for us to understand, but honestly it is up to the manufacturer to qualify their products. For you, this means what they say goes. BUT, and this is a big but! The manufacturer of the product you are using must provide you with a certificate which contains the following specific information about the product you are using:
1. Calls out and lists the specific product (in metal roofing this is the paint used).
2. States how the product qualifies (in metal roofing this is through reducing heat gain - usually).
3. States that it meets or exceeds the requirements.
4. That it qualifies in accordance with IRS Notice 2006-26.
5. Has a perjury declaration statement, and
6. Is signed by a person authorized to bind the manufacturer in these matters.
In other words...don't take their word for it - get it "Certified"!

We have really been lucky with a beautiful spring, summer and beginning of fall, but now is when the weather tightness of your roof will really show. Confused About The Tax Credit?

We are hearing more and more about metal roofing suppliers in the industry who are stating their products qualify for the energy tax credit when the reality is "some" of their products qualify. "Tax Credit" are major buzz words right now. We hear them on the radio and TV for windows, doors, roofs, etc. So roofing companies are throwing them around, without narrowing down exactly which products qualify. There is a specific list of paint systems which qualify for the credit, and we can help you understand if the product you are thinking about is part of the credit. Pin down your roofer or contractor and get it in writing, through a paint certificate or qualifying documents. As the purchaser, you are responsible for obtaining and keeping the proper documents for your tax records with regards to the tax credit...so be diligent - it's your money!

DRAG SCREWS 101

This is a 24 gauge panel system, installed up at Alpental, so the snow during winter is DEEP. The weight of the snow actually ripped the panels right off the roof, the screws cutting through the 24 gauge material. Before installing the panels, the Drag load needed to be determined to establish the number of "Drag Screws" to use. Drag Load is the force imposed upon a sloped panel caused by gravity and sliding snow. Standing seam panels, those attached to the roof structure with concealed clips, are free to “float” with expansion and contraction. If left completely free, they would slide off the roof. Drag load has to be combated by “fixing” one end of a standing seam panel. This is typically accomplished under the ridge/peak flashing to conceal the screw. At the “fixed” point, the panel is through fastened to the substrate. The type and number of screws needed, per panel, to resist drag load forces are determined by investigating the substrate material, slope, length of panel, panel width, and geographical snow load. It all comes down to the importance of following the manufacturers recommendations, reading and calculating the load tables, and understanding all of the conditions that might effect the metal roof installation.

Roofing Repair Work Put On Hold

Wow....within weeks, it became very clear that there is far too much metal roof repair work for us to take on right now and keep up with our new projects. We really wanted to help customers in a timely manner, but because repair work takes very skilled crew members, we found we cannot afford for them to be gone from our current new projects. We continue to back up our work with a lifetime installation warranty and will be there for our family of customers if there should ever be a problem, but we will not be looking at metal roofs that we did not originally install at this time. We can still take your calls and possibly help you out with suggestions in specific areas, but for now we are not taking on any more repair work nor do we have any other company to refer you to.

Metal Roof Repair

Metal roofing has become so popular it has lead to a quickly growing "repair" market. We are starting to get calls weekly from homeowners who need some work done on their existing metal roofs. We always recommend they contact their original roofer, but a majority of the time, they are not to be found. Repairs can be anything from leaking, flashings that have come off, destruction to the roofing by fallen trees, etc. We start by asking you a few questions about the problem and if you know the product you have, or can describe it based on the panel width, number of ribs or striations (bumps in the panels) and/or how high the major ribs are (pictures of the roofing and visible damage can be emailed to us to help us understand your repair). Then our operations manager will set up a time to take a look at your issue. There is a service call fee involved, to cover our time, and sometimes we can fix the problem while we are at your location. Other times, we will have to order parts, or panels and schedule a crew to come out and make the repair. We will provide you with a written proposal if we need to return for more work. We have access to almost every metal roofing panel available, and over 30 years experience in the metal market. Some panels are no longer produced, but many times a very similar product and color can be substituted. Metal roofing maintained properly and repaired quickly if their is damage, will last your lifetime, so choosing a dependable company to install and/or repair your roof is a wise investment of your time and money.

Common Metal Roof Flashing Terms

These are some of the common metal roofing flashings and where they will go on your project. Most manufacturers offer standard parts and pieces to complete common roofing and siding jobs, but when a standard part just won't work, we can get a custom piece made. Pricing for custom pieces is based on amount of material used and the number of bends/cuts, so they are very similar in cost to standard parts. Each type of metal roofing has slightly different flashings to fit the profile of the roof (meaning how high and far apart the ribs might be).

IronOx - Cold-Rolled Steel

Let your creative juices flow! This panel naturally rusts and will provide an artistic oxide finish. It's meant to look like the old-fashioned steel roofing that has graced the countrysides for years - without the wait! IronOx is made by ASC Building Products in 22 gauge with a 36" out-to-out width. It is unpainted and untreated steel and has no warranty from the manufacturer. The above picture is: Left - Nu-Wave in Bare Zincalume Finish; Middle - IronOx right off the cutting machine; Right - IronOx after sitting outside for 30 days (very little rain). We have another panel outside and will post it after 6 months. You can see it doesn't take much to get this to a "rusty" stage.

We got this great note from the Barrientos-Zepeda and Munoz families. We worked on their houses back in April during our Rebuilding Together Project for 2009. Most amazing was spending the day actually helping them accomplish projects that they would otherwise have to hire professionals. More and more families are finding it necessary to rely on outside help, especially now during our current economic downturn. Now is the time to check with your neighbors who might need you.

The link below is the Roofs Product List of eligible "Energy Star" rated roofs that qualify for the $1,500 American Reinvestment and Recover Act tax credit for 2009 and 2010. This list shows the manufacturer's and their panel profiles that qualify, however, the Warranty column is not 100% correct and the Model column does not include all colors which qualify. Let us know if you have any questions about products you are interested and and whether they qualify or not.

Do-It-Yourself Project #6 - Party Pavillion

We made this pavillion to keep the pine needles off the BBQ. To keep the cost down, we used 29 gauge Norclad in Bare Zincalume (unpainted) and then used Classic Brown trim pieces. It is easy to keep the debris from building up, just a quick few brushes with a push broom.

Getting ready to roof or side your shop, maybe a pole building or even a pavilion to keep your BBQ guests dry. One of the most economical solutions we have is called "Norclad" by ASC Building Products. Typically sold in 29 gauge, this panel will span 2' and still be walkable. Norclad has a 36" coverage, a 5/8" high rib every 9 inches, with 2 minor ribs in between. A screw with a neoprene washer goes in the top of the panel at a flat spot and through to the substrate below. Norclad has a variety of standard flashings, but custom flashings are no problem either. The turn around time for ordering is about 4 days, and the panels are cut to the exact length you need within 1/4" increments (angle cuts are up to you). The word on the street....metal prices are on the rise. We have been told by most of our manufacturers that steel pricing is starting to go back up and that we are at the lowest price for metal roofing right now. There is a strong demand for steel by the Chinese market, which is leading to increased demand, which we all know leads to increased prices. We are currently about 25% lower than we were this time last year...and metal roofing prices are only going up from here. Current pricing, combined with the $1500 Tax Credit means now is the time to get that metal roof on your home.

Standing Seam Roofing

Standing Seam is a common term used to describe many manufacturers panels. In most cases, standing seam refers to panels that are full length from the ridge to the eave, usually between 12" and 18" wide, with a high rib (about 1" to 2") on each side and either a flat surface or some minor ribs in the middle. The panels will either have a flange on one side for screwing directly to a substrate, or they will have clips which are installed onto the substrate then the panels snap into the clips. Standing seam panels are very popular in the Pacific Northwest. One major benefit is the screws are hidden, which is aesthetically pleasing and helps eliminate debris buildup such as pine needles. Manufacturers in this area produce a variety of standing seam panels and we are here to help you pick the best panel for your project.

AEP Span in Tacoma

When you place a materials order with us, if you are picking it up and it is bigger than we can lift by hand, we will have you pick it up at AEP Span in Tacoma. Their address is 2141 Milwaukee Way, Tacoma, 98422. They are open from 7am to about 5:45pm. You can call us ahead of time (253-926-1633) and we can verify the order is ready for you. We will also provide you with a pick-up number which will make it easier to locate. The map above shows their location off Highway 509. Please note you will turn in just before Milwaukee - you cannot get into the AEP Span yard from Milwaukee.

Some tips:

1. Call us first to verify your order is ready (253-926-1633).
2. Bring your pick-up number we have provided.
3. Prior to leaving the lot - check your packing slip to verify the number of boxes and skids.
4. Note any visible damage to packaging or parts not packaged prior to leaving.
5. Tie down your loads.

Once you unpack your materials, if there is any damage, please let us know asap. If we need to replace the materials, we will need the damaged panels/flashings returned. Pictures of the damage are very helpful too.

Raise the Roof! Go Haley, Go Haley!

Sometimes it's worth sharing with everyone what it takes to be a successful company. It's not just how we help our customers, but how we help our community. Lucky for us, we have one incredibly giving person amongst us, and we are proud! I am talking about Haley. She is a board member of Rebuilding Together South Sound which takes a lot of her personal and business time. She has many meetings, and as Rebuilding's annual event approaches, it gets very hectic for her. She just finished meeting with the homeowners from our project in April of 2009 and soon will start planning for the next event.

But it's not just Rebuilding Together. Haley manages to take on several charities each year; participating in bicycle and motorcycle rides, 1/2 marathons, walks and auctions. She seems to love them all and puts her heart and soul into each event. But that's the kind of person Haley is ... she jumps in with the same two feet every day at work too. Part of what makes this such a great company to work for is to work along side someone like Haley. We all have our gifts, and hers is sharing with others. Lucky us!
