We get that question all the time. Adding firring to your metal roofing project depends on several factors, but often it comes down to cost. In many cases we can roof right over existing composition shingles or torch-down type roofing and save cost on disposal and also save space in the landfills but other times firring is necessary. We will add firring on top of a composition or torch-down type roof that is not even or does not lay flat or to help build the pitch of a roof. Firring is attached directly to the framing of the roof so it also gives us a new solid surface to apply the roofing to. We will not fir over a wood shake or shingle roof, that must be torn off before reroofing. When we add firring, we space it according to the metal roofing specifications on span and load tables for your area.
