Firehot Fireworks!

Burning fireworks flying about the neighborhood on Saturday will be fun...and if you have a metal roof - you will have one less thing to worry about! Have a safe Fourth of July!

One of those rocket fireworks that a neighbor shot off landed on the metal roof of my sunroon last night. It hit with such a thud I jumped right out of my seat. What was left of it (a stick with tube of cardboard) then bounced onto my patio. Since I can't see the sunroom roof without climbing a tall ladder which I don't have, I cannot get a close-up look to see if any damage has been done to the roof. I looked at the roof from afar and can see a black spot which looks to be several inches round. So I can't tell if it is just residue that will wash away with the rain or if there is damage to the metal that, over time, will cause the roof to rust through. Any thoughts?

It would be good to get up there and take a closer look to be sure. Most likely you will be able to wash the soot burn off the roof (do not use anything abrasive - you are better off with a little discoloration then taking the paint off). The paint finish on most metal roofs has an undercoat of either galvanized metal or zincalume (zinc and aluminum). Both of these protect the actual steel underneath, and are hard to get through without actually gouging the metal. The kind of paint finish you have will determine the likelyhood of any rusting. If you know the manufacturer, panel or paint finish on your roof...I can get you a little more information, but first instinct - you should have no problems. If you can get up there and make sure there is only surface marks and no additional action needs to be taken, that would be best.

I had fireworks rain on my galvanized roof and now I have thousands of small spots that are white powder, is it a reaction with the fireworks residue? I swept all the litter off the next day but after condensation and rain these spots get worse every day. My Neighbor put on one heck of a show but I feel he ruined my roof

Do you know what finish your roof actually has...it is galvanized like a G90 or is it a zincalume finish? If you know the manufacturer of your roof and what panel it is...I can tell you the finish.
